About

My name is Laura Shoe, and I live on Sunny Drive in the River Road neighborhood. My neighbors Mary Leoni and Polly Habliston and I were in a meeting in summer 2024 with Lane County Transportation Planning officials about Horn Lane pedestrian safety. As an aside, Mary asked why Fairway Drive between Horn and W. Hilliard was in such bad shape while Maple Lane next door was not. They pulled up a map and said, in essence, “As we thought—Fairway is a local access road (LAR), and Maple is not. It is up to homeowners to maintain LARs.” Polly wasn’t surprised since she lives on an LAR and knew it, but Mary and I were stunned that homeowners would have to maintain a public through-street. Still, I didn’t think much more about it—until Mary later told me she had noticed from the map that her street and much of mine were also LARs. At that point, I was so angry that homeowners were expected to take on this basic government function (while receiving no tax rebate for doing so) that I had to get involved in trying to end this madness. I, Polly, Mary, Debra Higbee, and others are working together to push for change. Will you join us?

Required note: While I was elected to the River Road Community Organization Board in March 2025, this site represents my opinions solely as a homeowner and voter.

For 70+ years Lane County has gotten away with, "We feel for you LAR homeowners, but there's nothing we can do" - when they have the authority to take responsibility for these roads.
